Saw two motorcycle cops on the way home posted up by a big bottlenecking intersection on a popular parkway. My first thought was “hmm, that’s weird, they’ll never catch speeders there.”

Turns out they were posted up there to read inspection and plate stickers to catch people with expired versions of both. Not to make this political, but isn’t the current narrative that these guys take their own lives into their hands with every traffic stop they attend? Seems like they wouldn’t want to make stops like this for no real payoff other than money making, considering they believe everyone is out to get them.

I’m just saying...

Here in BC all they do is look for seatbelts, cell phones, and do HOV lane enforcement. Pretty sure all of their vehicles are equipped with automatic scanners that alert them to any expired registration or lapse of insurance, and they just flip on the lights and collect the money.

Watch your speed on the surface streets. Up to 120 on any highway in the lower mainland regardless of posted limit is safe, except in construction zones with posted lower limits. Out in the sticks where the limit is 120, set the cruise to 140 and just steer. Remember though, 40 over and they keep your car permanently, suspended your license lengthily, and fine you heavily.

School zones and parks are 30kmh max, and they are enforced randomly enough that you’d just better get used to abiding.

Aside from that, because everyone here seems to be some degree of either inept or incompetent whilst behind the wheel, it is simple for an experienced driver to navigate without police attention, or subsequent costs.

This. The cities treat the cops like revenue generating robots, forcing them to meet arbitrary numbers in the name of “safety”. No cop signed up to give out expired inspection tickets. I would gladly pay more in taxes if it meant getting the cops off the public with the pointless tickets.

I’m fine with this. Uninspected and unregistered vehicles are also often uninsured. I don’t want to share the road with a car that a) might not be safe to drive, b) can’t be tracked in the case of a hit and run, or c) can't pay for damage to my car after they hit me.

That is serving the State. Police are a vehicle for enforcement of State rules and regulations. Police aren’t a security force there to make sure you get to and from work safely, they serve the state/local municipality in enforcing law. By their job description, it is literally their job to issue violations to people who have not kept up with their registration. Just because an officer isn’t in a shootout with a bank robbers doesn’t mean they aren’t doing their job.

Yesterday they had a morning traffic jam around Akron, Ohio. It happened because nobody was prepared for about 120 days of projects at I-76 and Rte 8. North of the shitstorm, police took advantage of the people who were trying to make up time after being stuck in traffic for a while. The reason for the mess I’ve been told by a coworker is they didn’t see any detour signs for where the construction is starting. Should be a good money maker for the police over the half a year.
